|| OPENING RECEPTION ||
|| Featured Artists || Kimberly Balla and Sky Rockenbach || 8'oclock moment with by Halley Greg || Kimberly Balla My paintings are like finger prints, each having their own soul or essence so unique it may only be created by nature itself. I use a new approach to the old medium of oil paint; I mix new materials from the modern era, with the timeless oils of the past. I’m entrapped by my obsession with the magic-like chemical approach which captures a natural process freezing it in time. I am bound to the exploration of my discovered process, as if it has an energy which is so captivating that I feel I need endless time to understand it. Like the puppet master to the show, I am entranced by a technique I will never completely harness, only have a hand in its direction. I aim to create hypnagogic lands of ethereal figures free floating in a space which the viewer can dive into and escape the noise of everyday life. I intend for my work to create a void into a world which seems familiar yet unfamiliar, and encourages the discussion of the micro macro make-up of life and distant realities.|| Sky Rockenbach Much of Sky’s personal aesthetic is influenced by her time exploring the vast wilderness along the west coast of North America, and where she currently resides in Bellingham Washington. Confidence, talent, training, and obtuse stubbornness is what has kept her passion for art alive. To best understand her work, it must be viewed as part of the genre of romanticism. Sky has begun to reclaim nature as the soul of what is important in today’s society. Both love and loss are a key element to the creative process in her personal work. By mixing landscapes with references to spiritual traditions, the occult symbolism is a message calling us to understand our own psychological realms. The rich colors in her work comes from using many transparent layers of oil paint. This laborious technique means any work can take months to create. Her large mandala paintings can take upwards of a year to come to completion. Her training in visual art includes painting, drawing, photography as well as graphic design. Starting in 2006 she attended Idyllwild Arts Academy and enrolled into the Visual Art department. She continued her education at Emily Carr Institute (Now Emily Carr University) and received her Bachelors of Fine Art. The main focus of her career after graduating was centered around graphic design, web design, and videography. However in 2016 she started an apprenticeship as a tattooist which expanded upon her artistic skill set. In 2019 Sky was able to start working in a studio space which allowed her to start taking up oil painting in a serious capacity. Today she balances her career around taking clients for both tattooing and graphic design, alongside showing her paintings in Galleries and at Festivals. ||
