Cézanne, one of the great Modern painters sought to continually disintegrate one’s point of view into a series of relationships – one brushstroke in relation to the next, and the relationships between objects in space. In doing this, Cézanne evolved the definition of art to include abstraction. Today, Shift Curator and Cézanne Scholar, Liz Patterson, asks that you discover the relationships between the works shown here, using Cézanne’s methods as a determining link. Four methods are presented: figure and ground inversion, realism & materiality, color modulation, and facets. Shift Gallery is a Contemporary artist-run gallery located in Seattle, and theartists of this venue are unique in that they operate with full autonomy. The nature of Shift Gallery allows for artists to evolve in any way that they wish and the gallery is treated as a blank canvas, as a possibility space. In this way, Shift Gallery is an ever-evolving artistic environment, the results of which can be seen here today.
