We at AXIS are deeply concerned for everyone's health and safety. Gallery AXIS will not be participating in April Artwalk due to the size of our venue in regard to crowd restrictions.
At this time, we are limiting our business hours. If you'd like to see the art in person please call the AXIS main office to set up an appointment (206) 681-9316 or email [email protected]. We are optimistic that we will all be able to participate in the June Artwalk featuring the art of Kev Ducoing and Joseph Brooks. Until then our Current Shows will be on display and can be seen from the windows for your enjoyment. Fingers crossed for a digital gallery to be posted soon. Stay connected, make smart decisions, This too shall pass.

|| Featured Artists || Kimberly Balla and Sky Rockenbach || 8'oclock moment with by Halley Greg || Kimberly Balla My paintings are like finger prints, each having their own soul or essence so unique it may only be created by nature itself. I use a new approach to the old medium of oil paint; I mix new materials from the modern era, with the timeless oils of the past. I’m entrapped by my obsession with the magic-like chemical approach which captures a natural process freezing it in time. I am bound to the exploration of my discovered process, as if it has an energy which is so captivating that I feel I need endless time to understand it. Like the puppet master to the show, I am entranced by a technique I will never completely harness, only have a hand in its direction. I aim to create hypnagogic lands of ethereal figures free floating in a space which the viewer can dive into and escape the noise of everyday life. I intend for my work to create a void into a world which seems familiar yet unfamiliar, and encourages the discussion of the micro macro make-up of life and distant realities.|| Sky Rockenbach Much of Sky’s personal aesthetic is influenced by her time exploring the vast wilderness along the west coast of North America, and where she currently resides in Bellingham Washington. Confidence, talent, training, and obtuse stubbornness is what has kept her passion for art alive. To best understand her work, it must be viewed as part of the genre of romanticism. Sky has begun to reclaim nature as the soul of what is important in today’s society. Both love and loss are a key element to the creative process in her personal work. By mixing landscapes with references to spiritual traditions, the occult symbolism is a message calling us to understand our own psychological realms. The rich colors in her work comes from using many transparent layers of oil paint. This laborious technique means any work can take months to create. Her large mandala paintings can take upwards of a year to come to completion. Her training in visual art includes painting, drawing, photography as well as graphic design. Starting in 2006 she attended Idyllwild Arts Academy and enrolled into the Visual Art department. She continued her education at Emily Carr Institute (Now Emily Carr University) and received her Bachelors of Fine Art. The main focus of her career after graduating was centered around graphic design, web design, and videography. However in 2016 she started an apprenticeship as a tattooist which expanded upon her artistic skill set. In 2019 Sky was able to start working in a studio space which allowed her to start taking up oil painting in a serious capacity. Today she balances her career around taking clients for both tattooing and graphic design, alongside showing her paintings in Galleries and at Festivals. || || Featured Artists ||
Erin Oostra and Kalee Bly Choiniere Erin Oostra is a Seattle-based painter and graphic designer whose work explores the beauty and movement she finds all around her, whether summiting a mountain or crossing city streets. She’s best known for her abstract and impressionistic paintings inspired by the mountains and oceans of the Pacific Northwest. With strong, fluid strokes, her latest works capture an awe and respect for the dangerous beauty of nature. || Kalee Bly Choiniere is a painter, illustrator, and writer residing in Seattle, WA who creates morbidly whimsical images inspired the unsettling madness of the expansiveness of the world. Her biggest inspirations are Jonathan Zawada and Evan McCohan, giving a mystical perspective to perceived reality. Since childhood she has created twisting images with ink on paper and has continued to paint them bigger and bigger on wood paneling and walls. || Come celebrate the First Pioneer Square Artwalk of 2020 on a special JAN 9th (second Thursday) with Gallery AXIS, as we host "Deep Listening;" a Visual Arts Group Exhibition featuring Meg Yates and Uyen Tran Gjerde ||
Meg Yates “Deep Listening” is a group of works from my daily painting practice, along with smaller collections that reflect my inquiry into Contemplative Art Approach, which I have been developing for over 14 years intersecting facets of monasticism and creativity. A main tenant of this approach is that how we make is as important as what we make. Breath, physical presence, connection with inner life, pause, deep listening and action taken from this stance influences both product and experience of the process. I am fascinated and motivated by the generative quality of experience gained by daily engagement with creative process, and value the impact of this body of work not only in artistic technique and skill, but additionally the inner fortitude gained through the stability of my practice which has seen me through illness, divorce and loss. It doesn’t have to be “good”, Or beautiful, Or adored. The aim is to be willing to go within, to be lead within even - and also to emerge with agency to express something of what was discovered there, that which is often beyond words. || Uyen Tran Gjerde My inspiration comes from everywhere and sometimes out of nowhere. I mostly find human connections and the relationships people with their environments they create fascinating. The moments I capture are often in between the main events. What’s hidden and not in plain view. || Come celebrate 2019's final First Thursday Artwalk with Gallery AXIS, as we host "Transitions;" a Visual Arts Group Exhibition featuring two of Seattle's own, Damon Maxwell and Leslie Bennett. || As 2019 comes to an end, Gallery AXIS invites you to explore these thought provoking bodies of work expressing both the relationship between materials and movement in three-dimensional form, and the intricacy of mixed media on canvas. Maxwell and Bennett execute the very "Transitions" we experience with art, emotional expression, and the closing of another beautiful year. || Leslie Bennett's work is inspired by the interplay between fluidity and rigidity; capturing a moment to make that dynamic permanent or releasing it to welcome something new and appreciating both. By using found and recycled materials in her work, she celebrates what normally would be discarded and shares her vision that everything has the ability to transform. Bennett's work was selected as part of the Eileen Fisher Chop Challenge on exhibit at Columbia City Gallery, and In 2018, her work was chosen for Bremerton's Collective Visions Gallery juried art competition and exhibited at Fremont's Saturn building. || Damon Maxwell’s art is a bold, bright and unapologetic celebration of life itself. While evoking the aggressive mark making of some of the early Abstract Expressionists such as Willem DeKooning and Franz Kline, Maxwell’s fresh palette also conjures such current contemporaries as Brian Rutenburg as well. His love of the human figure is central, and it is not uncommon to find subtle suggestions of its form amidst even the most abstract of Maxwell’s works. His underlying philosophy about creating art can be summed up by his statement “If my work doesn’t move me, how can I expect it to move anyone else?” Maxwell received his BFA from the University of California at Santa Barbara and has shown extensively throughout the Northwest. Damon has been the recipient of various honors and awards including the Liquitex Excellence in Art Award. He is also included in numerous public and private collections as well. Damon currently resides in Enumclaw, WA and works from his home studio. || || Featured Artists || Damon Maxwell Leslie Bennett ::: OPENING RECEPTION :::
Group Painting Show The Maritime Building Atelier is an art collective of like minded people looking for a place to express themselves and grow in their artistic faculties. The 3rd floor of the new renovated Maritime Building has become home to our discoveries. Like this building, our art evokes a sense of old and new. It rests on the edge of expressive mark making and classical representation. We are inspired by the pallets and application of thick paint like that of the impressionists, while aiming to create images through a lens ground in north west sensibility. ::: Featured Artist ::: David Peixoto Defne Savasan Rebecca Groat Herman Dawson Carmen Torres Kate Parr Amanda Feldman Burcu Kinay Toshiko Okumura Roxanne Davis Becca Rocconi 👁 -: OPENING RECEPTION :- 👁
